RADFORD, Va. (AP) -- Radford University is commemorating the signing of its charter as part of its centennial celebration.

Wednesday's event was to include appearances by Gov. Bob McDonnell and Toms Shoes co-founder Blake Mycoskie.

Signed in 1910, the charter created the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Radford, which later became Radford University.

Radford spokesman Jeff Douglas says the school began with 72 students and 13 faculty members on a 33-acre campus. It now has 386 faculty and 8,788 students on 191 acres.
