Kolton Karnes wanted to be a firefighter.

The Danville boy didn't live to fulfill his dream.  He drowned in the Dan River earlier this month, but his family is making sure others can reach their career goals.

Danville Community College is setting up a new scholarship in Karnes' honor.

It will go to a first or second year student at DCC who is enrolled in either Fire Science or Administration of Justice.

Karnes' grandmother, Tammy McKinney, works at DCC as director of the practical and registered nursing programs.  She says the scholarship will carry on Kolton's dream of saving lives.

"That's what my grandchild was all about. He wanted to help people and I just feel like this is a way we can give back to our community and honor Kolton."

The Kolton Karnes Memorial Scholarship will need donations from the community to reach the endowment stage.

To make a tax-deductible contribution, contact the DCC Educational Foundation at 1008 South Main Street; Danville, VA 24541 or call (434) 797-8495.  You can also e-mail info@dcc.vccs.edu.
