Economic development and higher education were in the spotlight Friday afternoon as U.S. Senator Jim Webb visited western Virginia.
Webb toured the Martinsville manufacturing facility of Applied Felts. The company makes felt tubes, used in the rehabilitation of sewer pipes and storm drains.
Webb said he was visiting southside to show residents his concern for their continuing economic struggles. He said he toured Applied Felts to learn more about a local success story.
Webb told reporters, "it's a good example of the types of things we can do." "We're not miracle workers," Webb said, "but we can get these things going one project at a time."
Webb was also scheduled to visit the New College Institute in Martinsville Friday afternoon. On Saturday, Webb will deliver the commencement address at Ferrum College in Franklin County.
