Hordes of people and their pets came out to the Salem Civic Center Saturday.

It wasn't for a dog show, but instead for a rabies clinic.

Earlier this week, two cases of rabies were announced in the Roanoke Valley.

To help keep pets safe, the City of Salem teamed up with other localities and the Virginia Department of Health to sponsor the clinic.

"We don't want our pets to get rabies because then we can get rabies, so we're trying to build up that barrier and protect not only animals but families," says Dick Tabb with the Department of Health.

Rabies shots were given to cats and dogs for just $5 each.

More than 800 pets were vaccinated.
