While most state employees had Friday off without pay, staff at Radford University and Virginia Tech put in a full day's work before this memorial day weekend.
President of RU, Penny Kyle, said the decision for employees not to take the furlough was due in part that they haven't had pay increases in more than three years.
Kyle said she wrote the state a check for more than $330,000 one day's payroll at RU.
She also sent one day's pay for herself.
"I think that even this little bit of money, a one day's day, makes a big difference to some of our families. So, I don't think they mind being at work at all today," said Kyle.
There were no furloughs at Virginia Tech either on Friday.
A spokesman for the school said a day's pay tops $800,000 and came out of the university's overall budget.
