Local law enforcement celebrates its new graduates, and its new academy.

The Roanoke City Police Department graduated eight police recruits from its new Training Academy on Friday.

Located on Barns Avenue, the new academy has a water- training facility and a full- size gym for physical defense tactics.

"This graduating class holds a special place in our history... This is the first class to graduate from this wonderful facility," said Chief Joe Gaskins.

"We're proud of what they've accomplished and we're gonna be continually proud of what this facility will accomplish," said Deputy Chief Tim Jones.

The new academy opened its doors in early April, where the graduates have to complete their basic academy training.
