GEORGE MASON EDGES RADFORD AGAIN; CLAIMS SECOND STRAIGHT GROUP A BOYS SOCCER TITLE

RADFORD, Va. – In a rematch of last year's title match, George Mason scored a goal in each half and edged Radford, 2-1, to capture its second straight Group A Boys Soccer State Championship Sunday morning at Radford University as part of the 2010 Spring Jubilee.

After setting up Nick Smirniotopoulos' first goal of the game, George Mason's Andrew Arias provided the eventual game winner in the 79th minute on a shot from just inside the 18-yard box.

Radford's only strike came on Taka Masuda's penalty kick in the final minute. 

George Mason finished with a 7-5 edge in shots, while both teams attempted two corner kicks.

George Mason has won five of the last 12 state titles.

BLACKSBURG CAPTURES 11th STATE CROWN WITH 3-0 BLANKING OF HIDDEN VALLEY

RADFORD, Va. – Blacksburg won its second straight Group AA Boys Soccer State Championship and 11th overall with a 3-0 victory over River Ridge rival Hidden Valley Sunday morning at Radford University as part of the 2010 Spring Jubilee.

The Bruins have won 11 of the last 22 Group AA State Championships in 17 tries.

Eli Betz scored the eventual game winner in the 28th minute, while Jack Cooper added goals in the 32nd and 52nd minutes, respectively.

Blacksburg finished with a 5-1 edge in shots, while four more corners.

NORTHSIDE CLAIMS FIRST GROUP AA SOFTBALL STATE TITLE IN EIGHT INNINGS, 1-0

RADFORD, Va. – Michelle Eplion's RBI single in the top of the eighth lifted Northside to a 1-0 victory over Abingdon and its first Group AA Softball State Title Sunday morning at Radford University as part of the 2010 Spring Jubilee.

Along with Eplion's game-winning hit, Lauren Boitnott threw a complete game, allowing just two hits, while striking out 15 and walking just one.

Despite the loss, Abingdon's Sha'Tara Cooper also went the distance, struck out seven, while allowing five hits.

Eplion's only hit of the contest plated Caitlyn Porterfield, who reached on a single to left field.
