Salem —     Police have filed a search warrant that indicates Shane Padgett confessed to killing Cara Holley.
The Roanoke County resident allegedly told a county police detective that he choked and beat her to death with a tire iron. Holley was killed in a field off Bandy Road. Police say the 21-year old suspect took them to the place in Franklin County where he left the body.  It was in a sleeping bag covered with planks and plywood.  According to police Padgett took Holley's driver's license and a credit card. He managed to buy gas with it, but the card was declined when he tried to buy items at the WalMart on 220.  He was arrested
near Rocky Mount friday morning at the wheel of her SUV.

Police says Padgett killed Holley, so he could take her '08 Kia Sorrento.  He wanted her vehicle, because it was newer than his 2000 Ford. He said he was planning "to make [a] journey" out of Roanoke. Padgett claimed he and Holley spent about an hour smoking marijuana, before he attacked her first using his bare hands.  Police filed the search warrant, so they could examine Padgett's body, including his fingernails, to obtain forensic evidence to corroberate his story.
