AFTON, Va. —
A stretch of road so dangerous it claimed five lives in one summer.
Work is now underway at the intersection of state routes 151 and 635 in Nelson County to make the road more safe.
V-DOT is making changes at the site of one accident where a woman and her two daughters were struck and killed in 2007.
A community effort helped lower the speed limit to 45 miles an hour, increase police patrols, and now an additional turn lane is being added at the intersection.
"There are always going to be accidents on this road. That's the nature of the beast. Its a numbers game, the more you drive the more likely you are to be in an accident. But this should help," said Tommy Stafford, the founder of Project 151, the community effort to help improve the road.
