SALEM, Va. — The race to replace Morgan Griffith in the House of Delegates has its first official candidate.
This morning, attorney Greg Habeeb said he will seek the Republican nomination in the 8th House District.
Habeeb made his announcement in front of the Old Roanoke County Courthouse in Salem.
The crowd of supporters included 9th District Congressman-elect Griffith, 6th District Congressman Bob Goodlatte, Senator Ralph Smith and other leading Republicans.
"I want to bring leadership to Richmond to solve problems," Habeeb told News 7 in an interview following his announcement. "To me it's not about partisanship. It's not about bickering. It's about figuring out what we can do to improve the lives of the 8th District's citizens."
Habeeb and other candidates won't have long to campaign. The nomination will likely be decided in early December. Governor McDonnell will schedule the special election in time for the winner to join other lawmakers for the start of General Assembly session in mid-January.
