GRAYSON CO., Va. — Property taxes in Grayson County have risen significantly.
On Tuesday night, some residents gathered at a rally to oppose the 44% increase.
County Administrator Jonathan Sweet said the tax hike could not be avoided.
He said the county's finances are in the middle a perfect storm, including the bad economy, loss of jobs, reduced state funding and unanticipated expenses.
"We didn't have the revenues needed to cover our obligations. So, it was required to increase it to that rate," said Jonathan Sweet, Grayson County Administrator.
Sweet said the county's financial advisors recommended an even higher tax increase, but county cuts were made to make the increase more reasonable.
