A chilly jump raises money for Special Olympics Virginia

RADFORD, Va — It was probably the coolest thing they did all weekend.

On Saturday afternoon, about 150 people jumped into the New River in Radford for the second annual Highlander Polar Plunge.

The plunge raised $15,000 for Special Olympics Virginia.

Some people dove in while others took it slow but they didn't stay in the water for very long. The water temperature was 34 degrees.

But everyone had a lot of fun. There were fraternities, Radford University's soccer team and even a man who wore a wedding dress after a dare by his boss.

"She wants it back afterward," says Alan Brainard, "I don't know how it's going to look afterward but she doesn't mind. I think she's happy to know it's going for a good cause."

The plunge is part of Radford University's 2011 Homecoming events. It was also co-sponsored by the Radford City Police Department.
