Ten Commandments a hot topic at Giles Co. school board meeting

March 15, 2011

GILES CO.; Va. — Is there a legal way to display the Ten Commandments on the walls of Giles County Schools?

On Tuesday the school board heard arguments for a new display to go up that would replace the one the school board voted to take down last month.

Roughly 100 parents and community members showed up to Giles High School for the school board meeting, but only three people spoke out in support of the Ten Commandments being displayed on the school walls.

The school board has previously said they took down the displays for legal reasons; a lawsuit could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But a new proposal would showcase the Ten Commandments with eight other documents in a display that highlights their historical significance.

A local attorney, who presented the idea to the school board, said this could be a way around lawsuits.  He said these types of historical displays have stood up to legal challenges in other school districts.

The school board says it will consider the proposals and consult their attorneys before making a decision.
