MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Talks to consolidate Martinsville and Henry County Schools are over for now.
The Henry County School Board ended negotiations to combine the two school districts on Thursday.
It was an idea to save money in an area that's been hit hard by the bad economy.
The merger idea came up last year, but this hasn't been the first time it's been considered.
More serious talks and meetings started this year.
A few weeks ago, both school boards asked their superintendents to find out how much the merger would cost.
Shortly after that, the Henry County Board of Supervisors encouraged the talks to end because the majority of county residents opposed the plan.
