April 18, 2011|WDBJ Web Staff

Roanoke, Va.--- — The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra has announced new additions to next season's Masterworks lineup.

Soon they will hold their Inaugural Star City International Piano Competition.  It's open to any pianist ages 16 to 30.

The first place winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize, along with being the featured soloist in the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra's Masterworks concert next spring.

Music Director David Stewart Wiley believes the inaugural contest will help put Roanoke in the spotlight, calling the competition "Roanoke's Piano American Idol."  He adds that he wants to showcase the rising stars of the present and future.

In addition to the competition, the RSO also announced next season they will introduce Bluegrass and mountain music into its repertoire, with the help of musician and composer Jeff Midkiff.

Midkiff is an award winning mandolin player and fiddler and former member of the Lonesome River Band.  Wiley believes his concerto will reflect "the rich and colorful palette of music performed and enjoyed right here in the Blue Ridge."
