PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Deputies have arrested a man on murder charges for a shooting that happened Monday afternoon.

39-year-old Anthony Leon Cobbs was shot and killed along State Route 360, according to Captain Donald Motley with the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office.

Motley says Cobbs, who lived on Lawless Creek Road in Pittsylvania County, was shot near the intersection of Green Farm Road and 360 sometime before 2:00 p.m. Monday.  After being shot, deputies believe Cobbs tried to drive away for help.  He made it less than a mile before getting out of his car and collapsing on 360.  A passerby called 911, but Cobbs died before medics arrived.

Deputies have arrested 52-year-old Samuel Smith and charged him with first degree murder.

Witnesses to the crime say Smith and Cobbs were arguing before the shooting happened.  They say the argument centered around cars and scrap metal.

Investigators say one person is in custody after a shooting Pittsylvania County.  Investigators were still at the scene on Old Richmond Road well into Monday afternoon.

A sheriff's department lieutenant confirmed the investigation but would not say anything about the person who was shot.
