LEXINGTON, Va. —

A local university is taking one-more step to reduce its carbon foot print.

Monday, Washington and Lee announced it entered into a deal to bring solar paneling to campus.

When it's completed, W&L will become the largest solar energy project in the Commonwealth.

More than 15-hundred panels will be built over the parking garage and added to the roof of law school.

W&L President Ken Ruscio explains, "It's going to be cost effective in the long run. It's a good business move for us, as well as the right thing to do."

"The solar panels will produce enough power for 44-homes - to run the power in 44 houses. It's 3% of the current electric load on this campus," says W&L Facilities Management Director Scott Beebe.

The project should be completed by the end of the year.

It's estimated it will save about 417-trees a year.

The school hopes to become carbon neutral by 2050.
