ACLU preparing lawsuit against Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors

September 07, 2011|Justin Ward | Reporter

PITTSYLVANIA Co., Va. — The American Civil Liberties Union is still preparing to sue the Pittsylvania County board of supervisors if it continues its Christian prayer.

A member of the ACLU told News7 litigation is in the works but wouldn't elaborate on the details of the possible suit.

More than 12 hundred people came out to support the board last night during its meeting.

At the meeting, the board adopted a faith policy stating the members do not support any particular religion.

But since all members of the board are all Christian, Chairman Tim Barber says they will continue praying.

"We fell like we're in compliance. State legislatures there they support us they say we're in compliance. I don't see where we're violating the constitution in any way. That's an interpretation," said Chairman Tim Barber.

In August the ACLU sent the board a letter asking them to stop praying in Jesus' name.

Attorneys in Danville have said they would support the board if they were to go to court.
