ROANOKE, Va. — Police say they’ve solved a cold case in Christiansburg.

In March, a woman was raped in her apartment and there were no hits on DNA evidence.

Then in October, this man Christopher Walrond was charged with fourteen counts of being a peeping Tom. DNA in that case matched the rape in March and he’s now been charged with the crime.

He’s been in jail since his original arrest.

Here's the full release from the town of Christiansburg:

A Christiansburg man currently in jail awaiting trial on other charges has been connected and charged with a cold case rape.

Christopher Matthew Walrond, 34 and from Christiansburg, is charged with one count of rape, one count of sodomy, and one count of breaking and entering with intent to commit rape.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred this past March, when a then-unidentified man allegedly forced his way into a woman’s apartment on Old Farm Village Road and raped her.

Police were able to collect DNA evidence from the victim; though initial analysis by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science garnered no matches from their existing DNA database.  There were no other leads in the case at that time.

Walrond was arrested this past October as part of a multi-jurisdictional investigation between Christiansburg and Blacksburg Police Departments and charged with 14 counts of peeping or spying into an occupied dwelling, breaking and entering, grand larceny, and unlawfully videotaping a child under the age of 14.

Walrond’s DNA was collected after his arrest on those charges, as required by state law.

The Department of Forensic Science recently sent notification that Walrond’s DNA sample matches the previously-unknown sample taken from the rape victim.

Walrond has been held without bond in the Western Virginia Regional Jail since his October arrest.

Though the investigation continues, Walrond is not currently a suspect in any other unsolved sexual assaults.
