ROANOKE, Va. — A Roanoke family planned to bring in the New Year over dinner with friends and family, but, their plans took quite the turn.

Instead, they welcomed Roanoke’s first New Year's baby about an hour and a half after midnight at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Valentina Cano-Hernandez was the first baby born at Roanoke Memorial Hospital on New Year’s Day.

The family said they didn't even know it was going to be a girl because they wanted to keep it a surprise.

Doctors say when the mother arrived at the hospital, another woman was also in labor so it suddenly became a competition.

The mother and father, who only speak Spanish, explained to News 7 that her early arrival was completely unexpected.

Valentina Cano-Hernandez was six pounds and fifteen ounces.

She joins a brother and two sisters, who actually picked out Valentina's name.

Valentina Cano-Hernandez was one of six babies born on New Year’s Day at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

LewisGale hospitals in both Salem and Blacksburg had no New Years babies.
