Running out of electricity

new power line project in the works

Appalachian Power hopes to have the power line working by 2015

February 09, 2012

BLACKSBURG; Va. — There could be an electrical overload in the Montgomery County area as early at 2015, if a new power line project isn't built, according to Appalachian Power.

The proposed new power line will connect the Merrimac substation, just outside of Blacksburg, with the Falling Branch substation, on the other side of Christiansburg.

The route is the most direct and will provide the least amount of impact to homeowners in the area and the environment, according to an Appalachian Power press release.

Appalachian Power submitted the proposed project to the State Corporation Commission, Thursday.  The Commission will now review the route and hold several public hearings on it.

Appalachian Power is hoping to be able to start construction in 2014 in order to have the new line up and running by 2015, to avoid any interruption of service.
