Woman killed in Martinsville crash on Saturday

The driver is facing several charges.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — A woman was killed in an accident in Martinsville on Saturday night, and a driver is facing DUI  and other charges.

According to the Martinsville Police Department, James Hairston of Martinsville was driving east on Church Street when he lost control of his vehicle near Salmon Street. Hairston's vehicle went about 150 feet off the road and hit a utility pole.

Melissa Jackson of Callands was a passenger in Hairston's vehicle and died in the accident.

Hairston was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for his injuries.

He has been issued warrants for DUI, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.

On March 24, 2012 the Martinsville Police investigated a single car accident that occurred at approximately 11:08 pm on East Church Street near Blue Ridge Street.   The vehicle was traveling east on Church Street and the driver lost control of the vehicle just past Salmon Street.  The vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and traveled approximately 150 feet before striking a utility pole.

The driver of the vehicle was James Benjamin Hairston, Jr. of 208 Pine Street Martinsville.  The passenger Melissa Renee Jackson of 1565 Mapleton Drive Callands was pronounced dead at the scene.

Warrants were issued for James Benjamin Hairston, Jr. for DUI, Reckless driving, and Driving while suspended. 

The accident is still under investigation by the Martinsville Police Department.  Officers B.D. Peters, R.D. Jones, and E.R. Martin investigated the accident.  The Police Department would like to thank the following departments for assistance.  Martinsville Fire and EMS, Martinsville Electric Department, Martinsville Public Works, and Dyers Store Volunteer Fire Department.
