ROANOKE, Va — WDBJ 7 has new information about Susan Willis' new job at a charter school in Winston Salem, North Carolina.
Susan Willis is the former principal at Roanoke's William Fleming High School. She was fired two years ago for her involvement in a SOL cheating scandal. A Virginia Department of Education investigation concluded Willis conspired to change students schedules so they wouldn't have to take SOL tests.
Willis was hired at STEAM Academy of Winston-Salem back in December. WDBJ7 talked to the CEO of Mosaica Education. Mosaica manages 75 charter schools across the country, including the one in Winston Salem.
Michael Connelly tells WDBJ7 the company knew of Willis' past problems at William Fleming High School. He says Willis was upfront about it on her application.
Connelly says the company did a thorough background check on Willis.
Connelly says it contacted various people including someone from the Roanoke City School system. Connelly declined to say who.
Superintendent Rita Bishop tells WDBJ7 she was never contacted by Mosaica about Willis.
Connelly calls Willis a gifted educator. "We believe she is going to make a valuable contribution. It's time to move on."
