Two people dead after car accident in Lynchburg

The accident happened just after 2:00 a.m. Saturday in the 7200 block of Timberlake Road.

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Two men are dead after a car accident early Saturday morning in Lynchburg. The accident happened just after 2:00 a.m. Saturday in the 7200 block of Timberlake Road.

The two vehicles collided going at a high rate of speed. One was driven by Amy Phillips of Bedford. She has been charged with DUI and two counts of manslaughter and is currently being held in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail without bond. The other was driven by John Hawkins of Lynchburg. Garry Moore of Spout Springs was a passenger in the front seat of Hawkins' vehicle. Hawkins and Moore died at the scene, both were wearing their seatbelts.

The road was closed until about 6:00 a.m. this morning but has since been re-opened.

On April 21, 2012 at 0213 hours, the Lynchburg Police Department and the Lynchburg Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle crash in the 7200 block of Timberlake Road involving a 2005 Honda Civic and a 1997 Ford Explorer.  The driver of the Honda has been identified as John Hawkins (26) of Lynchburg, VA.  The driver of the Ford has been identified as Amy Phillips (28) of Bedford, Va.  A front seat passenger in the Hawkins vehicle has been identified as Garry Moore (26) of Spout Springs, Va.

Mr. Hawkins had been westbound on Timberlake Road and was turning left into the Legacy Oaks Townhouses.  Ms. Phillips was eastbound on Timberlake Road traveling at a high rate of speed and struck the Honda on the right side.  Both Mr. Hawkins and Mr. Moore were pronounced deceased at the scene.  Both were wearing their seat belts.  Ms. Phillips, who was also wearing her seat belt, was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital with minor injuries.  She has been charged with DUI and two counts of manslaughter and is currently being held in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail without bond.        

The eastbound lanes of Timberlake Road in the 7200 block remained closed until 0620 hours while traffic investigators worked the scene.  The Lynchburg Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is continuing its investigation.
