GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. — Continuing coverage now of a deputy shooting in Grayson County.
That deputy is recovering after being shot Tuesday night at a home on Skyline Highway near Galax.
Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughn says Deputy Douglas Waller should recover all the way. He says his bullet proof vest was a lifesaver.
Just before Tuesday night Deputy Waller and Deputy Douglas Watson were sent to a home on Skyline Highway just outside of Galax.
The call came in as a domestic dispute between husband and wife Gary Wheatley and Crystal Gooslin. The sheriff says his deputies had been called to that home at least 20 times in the past year.
On Tuesday night, the sheriff says Wheatley started shooting as soon as Deputy Waller walked up to the home. Waller was shot just above the belt line. Deputy Watson fired back and missed.
Wheatley gave up a few minutes later. Last year that home is where deputies found 2,000 rounds of ammo, pistols and assault rifles. They charged Gooslin a convicted felon with possession of ammunition.
The sheriff said he sent two deputies because that is all he could send.
Deputy Waller went through four hours of surgery. He's married, but does not have children. The sheriff says Waller wears his vest religiously.
Both Wheatley and Gooslin are in the New River Valley Regional Jail. Wheatley is charged with two counts of attempted capital murder.
