UPDATE: 12-year-old girl drowns in Smith Mountain Lake

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. — WDBJ7 has learned that a 12-year-old drowned Friday morning in Smith Mountain lake.

According to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the girl went missing around 10 a.m. after falling off a raft. She was on the raft playing with a relative.

The girl was in the water at a location off Penhook Point Road, near the Franklin County/Pittsylvania County line.

The girl's identity has not been released.

The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries says there were adults present.

An official with the DGIF says rescue crews got on scene quickly, and found her within about 15 minutes. However, attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.

A supervisor for the department says he's seen a lot of drownings on the lake, but it's always harder when it's a child. 

"You never know when an emergency is going to occur," District Supervisor Karl Martin said. "This again is a tragedy that a lot of people won't forget.

He says you should wear a life jacket anytime you are around the water. 



Rescue crews are are responding to a report of a child missing in Smith Mountain Lake, near the Pittsylvania-Franklin County line.

Crews are on scene at a location off Penhook Point Road.

At this time, there is no confirmation that a child is actually missing. Officials got a report that a child fell off a float and into the water.
