UPDATE: Person killed in Interstate 81 crash in Montgomery County identified by state police

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. — The person killed in Tuesday's crash on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County has been identified by Virginia State Police.

73-year-old Barbara Barnette of Carrollton died in the accident.

The driver of the vehicle, 77-year-old Orvil Barnette of Carrollton, is still in the hospital.

He's being treated for his injuries at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.


A woman and three other people were hurt when their SUV crashed on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County Tuesday.

State Police say the crash happened around 1:18 p.m. in the northbound lanes near mile marker 120.  The SUV ran off the right side of the road.  The driver over-corrected and the Ford Explorer rolled over several times.

A woman in the front seat was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle.  She died at a hospital.  The man who was driving was also not wearing a seat belt.  He was flown to  Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.  Two children, ages 6 and 8, were in child seats.  They were taken by ambulance to Carilion New River Valley Medical Center.  Troopers describe their injuries as not life threatening.


State Police have not released any names of the people involved.  Troopers do say the vehicle is registered to a family in Carrollton, Virginia.

The crash scene just north of Christiansburg is now clear.


One lane of Interstate 81 North is closed because of an accident.

The north right lane and right lane are closed near mile marker 120.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, traffic is backed up three miles.
