UPDATE: Interstate 81 in Montgomery County back open after boulder falls on road during blasting

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation says I-81 South is back open after a boulder fell on the road during blasting.

It happened in Montgomery County, near mile marker 123. That's between Ironto and Christiansburg.

Blasting unexpectedly caused a boulder to roll onto the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Montgomery County.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says both southbound lanes of the interstate were closed near mile marker 123.  That's between Ironto and Christiansburg. As of 11:30 a.m.,  both southbound lanes were closed. Crews were working to get one lane open.

Drivers should expect delays on the interstate.
