Wythe County Dog Shelter closes over rabies concern

A dog that died may have had rabies.

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. — The Wythe County Dog Shelter is closed until Wednesday over concerns that a dog there had rabies.

According to a news release, the shelter took in a stray dog on August 13. On August 17, the dog showed health issues. The dog was taken to a veterinarian, and died Saturday.

The veterinarian believes that the dog may have had rabies. Test results are expected to be back Wednesday morning.

Dogs will not be taken into the shelter or adopted out of the shelter until the dog's cause of death is determined.
