Original story from Thursday, August 23

WDBJ7 checked with Virgina State Police this morning and found out that all lanes of Route 220 are back open.

WDBJ7 has learned that the driver of the tractor-trailer that crashed into the Blue Ridge Antique Mall in Rocky Mount has died in the accident.

One lane of Route 220 South near Rocky Mount is back open. Route 220 North is still closed.

At least five employees and several customers were inside the building when the truck crashed into it.

All of the employees and customers inside made it out safely.

"I heard the noise when it hit," store employee Ron Perdue told WDBJ7. "Then I looked out the window and I seen the truck sliding toward the building. It had already jack-knifed at that time. And then, just like that, it hits the building. And that's when we started to evacuate."

The truck was hauling cardboard.

The trucking company is based out of North Carolina.

According to WDBJ7's Bryce Williams, several people saw the driver slumped over before the impact.

A husband and wife who happened to be inside spoke to WDBJ7.

I had gone to the restroom and then I came back and I was at the far end of the building. Then all of a sudden there was this horrific rumble and noise. I could see sand blowing up and people started running and they were saying evacuate the building," Marilyn Burchett said.

"We were blessed. We were blessed. Thank Jesus we are here. The flames were three stories," Joel Burchett said. "The truck missed me by five feet. That's all. Unbelievable."
