Two teachers from our viewing area have been selected as regional teachers of the year.

Roanoke City Public Schools teacher Tracey Nielsen has been selected as the 2013 Region 6 Teacher of the Year, and Bedford County Public Schools teacher David Webb has been selected as Region 5 Teacher of the Year.

Both are now finalists for the 2013 Virginia Teacher of the Year award. The Teacher of the Year announcement will be made October 12 in Richmond. Eight teachers, including Nielsen and Webb, are up for the Teacher of the Year award.

Nielsen has worked in the Roanoke City School system for nearly 16 years. She is a special education teacher of deaf and hard of hearing pre-K students at Virginia Heights Elementary in Roanoke.

"She is the best of the best," Roanoke City Schools superintendent Rita Bishop wrote in a news release. "Her dedication to student success, staff support and growth, and patient communication is unparalleled. She is loved by the students, sought out by colleagues for her expertise in a wide variety of areas, and respected greatly by parents."

Webb is a music teacher at Jefferson Forest High School. Both announcements were made Thursday morning, and were a surprise to the teachers and their students.

"I don't know what to think. I'm blown away," Webb said.
