Vinton teenager killed in Franklin County car crash

The accident happened Sunday morning around 3:30 a.m. on Route 739.

A teenager is dead after an early morning car crash on Sunday.

Virginia State Police say 19 year old Rufus McGill was driving himself along with 5 others along Route 739 when he ran off the road and struck a tree.

15 year old Hannah Long was riding in the front set and was pronounced dead at the scene.  Troopers say neither she nor McGill were wearing seat belts.  McGill was flown to a Roanoke hospital.  No word on his condition.

The four other passengers were also taken to a Roanoke hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  They are between 19 and 20 years old.

The Virginia State Police are continuing their investigation into a single vehicle crash that occurred early Sunday morning around 3:30 a.m. on Route 739 one mile west of Route 643 in Franklin County.

The investigation revealed that a 2005 Cadillac CTS 4 door that was being operated by Rufus Arthur McGill II, age 19, of Roanoke, Va. was traveling eastbound on Route 739 when he ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.

A front seat passenger in the vehicle Hannah Marie Long, age 15, of Vinton, Va. was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

McGill was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash, and he was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Four other passengers in the vehicle all ranging from the ages of 19-20 were also transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
