Christiansburg vs. Salem

October 19, 2012|WDBJ7 Web Staff

SALEM, Va. — The Christiansburg Blue Demons started the season 5 and 0, but quickly lost two straight entering Friday night’s game in Salem.  Coach Tim Cromer's team had dominated the recent history with the Spartans since Salem's 2009 win.

The state championship golf team from Salem got some love tonight at Salem Stadium.

Down 7-nothing late in the first half, Christiansburg's Joey Augustin ran off the left side on the 3-yard touchdown, getting his team within one at 7-6.

But on the ensuing extra point, bad mechanics led to a forced pass, and Chandler Hunt picked it off for Salem.  Remember that play later.

It was 7-6 at the half, but the Demons took the lead thanks to a 9-play, 65-yard drive capped by a 16- yard scamper by Dequan Green Gause.  The TD made it 13-7 midway through the third quarter.

Salem regained the lead though as Devante Payne went up and over the top on the touch.  It was 14-13 Spartans late in the third.

They held on, grinding out the hard-earned one point win to stay unbeaten in what just may have been a playoff preview.
