BEDFORD CO., Va. — A former Bedford County Sheriff's deputy is set to be a free man, after admitting his guilt in a child sex case.
E.W. Grubbs was convicted in court on five counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor Friday. He was sentenced to 10 years, but the sentence was suspended. Grubbs had been in jail for 13 months. He is now free from jail. Grubbs was a school resource officer at Liberty High School.
The victim's family expressed disappointment with Grubbs' sentence. The victim, who was 16 when she was found in Kentucky with Grubbs, made a statement in court Friday saying that Grubbs controlled every aspect of her life for eight months.
"This is a very manipulative man who took advantage of a very vulnerable girl. With some evidentiary problems we had, I just felt like this was the best way to handle it,” prosecutor Randy Leach said.
