MONTGOMERY CO., Va. — Interstate 81 South near Radford has reopened.

The road was closed for several hours after a man was killed on the road Wednesday morning.


11 a.m. UPDATE: Virginia State Police have released a few more details about the death of a man on Interstate 81 South near Radford.

The accident was called in around 6:40 a.m. Wednesday morning. According to Virginia State Police spokesperson Bob Carpentieri, a man was hit by two or three vehicles and killed. He was hit near mile marker 108 at the Dry Valley Road overpass.

It’s not clear yet if the man was walking on the interstate or if he came off the overpass.

His name has not been released yet.

It's also not clear yet when I-81 will reopen. Drivers are being diverted onto Exit 109 in Radford.


8:55 a.m. UPDATE: We have new information just into the WDBJ7 Newsroom about a traffic backup on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County.


State Police say someone died at the scene at the Dry Valley Road overpass near Radford at mile marker 108.  

Our photographer says a body that's covered by a sheet is in the road.

The investigation will likely take a long time, and it has I-81 headed south shut down.   

Traffic is getting off the Interstate at highway I-77 (mile marker 109) or Tyler Road.  It's not clear when the interstate will reopen.

The Virginia Department of Transportation  says the accident is about a mile and a half south of exit 109.  That is near Radford.

Police are detouring traffic off the Interstate at exit 109 onto Highway 177.  VDOT recommends the following detour: Traffic will make a right at the end of the ramp onto Tyler Avenue south, continue into the City of Radford and take a left at the T-intersection in town. Drivers will then continue straight until they reach the interstate and return onto southbound I-81 at exit 105.

No estimated time for reopening southbound I-81 has been established.


Virginia State Police are working a traffic accident on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County.

Both southbound lanes at mile marker 108 are closed.
