SALEM, Va. — The high school wrestling state tournaments began Friday with Group AA and A teams competing at the Salem Civic Center. The Group AAA teams are at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake.

Grundy won the Group A team title last season, their 16th overall championship. In Group AA the Christiansburg dynasty continued with their 11th consecutive title.

This year the Blue Demons are once again the team to catch in Group AA, with the most individual wrestlers competing with nine. They're looking to win their 12th-straight team title, led by J.R. Wert and Tech commits Joey Dance and Zach Epperly.

"We've got three guys going for their fourth state championship with Wert in that group. They've stepped-up as leaders. They bumped-up weight classes to give us the strongest line-up as possible and so we're feeding off that," said head coach Daryl Weber. "But I've told the guys, you know we've got three guys going for their fourth state titles. We've got Coy Ozias going for his third. But you know really the big show for us are the other guys. How are they going to finish up."
