UPDATE: Police release names of people killed in murder-suicide

A man and woman were found dead inside of the Brandon Avenue home.

ROANOKE, Va. — Roanoke police Tuesday released the names of two people found dead inside a home on Brandon Avenue.  Investigators also described the situation as a murder-suicide.

The people killed were:

  • Erin Elizabeth Thomas, age 31, of Roanoke
  • Jon Peter McIlroy, age 58, of Roanoke

Police say both had been shot.  A gun was found next to McIlroy when the bodies were discovered Monday morning.

According to a news release from the Roanoke Police Department, the man and woman who were found dead inside of a home Monday morning both had gunshot wounds.

A gun was found inside of the home.

Their bodies have been taken to the medical examiner's office where their autopsies will be performed Tuesday.

12:05 p.m. update: Two bodies were found Monday morning in a Roanoke house.

One body was a man, and one was a woman.

At this time, the Roanoke Police Department is calling this a death investigation.

Police were called to the home, 1101 Brandon Avenue, shortly before 10 a.m.  The home is at the corner of Brandon Avenue and Brighton Road. Someone who knew the people who lived inside of the home discovered the bodies.

Neighbors say a man, woman, and their daughter lived in the home. A neighbor told WDBJ7's Joe Dashiell that he did not hear anything unusual overnight.

"Every time I saw her, the lady, she seemed like she was in good spirits," neighbor Briton Mauch said. "She never seemed like there was a problem. Their daughter always seemed happy. Whenever I would see her I would say hi to her."

10:45 a.m.: The Roanoke Police Department is working an incident in the 1100 block of Brandon Avenue.

It’s not clear what the incident is.

Several police officers are on scene, which is near the intersection of Brandon Avenue and Brighton Road.

Every time I saw her, the lady, she seemed like she was in good spirits. She never seemed like there was a problem. Their daughter always seemed happy. Whenever I would see her I would say hi to her.
