ROANOKE, Va. — Healthy nutrition was on the mind of Miss Virginia Thursday, as she visited with students in Roanoke.

Rosemary Willis spent the day at James Madison Middle School, where she joined Carilion Catering Chef Darla Mehrkens for a monthly class focused on healthy eating.

Willis encouraged the students to be role models for their own families, "saying hey can we have some more vegetables or do you think we can balance our meal with a protein or making sure they have their dairy products," she said. "So it's really encouraging those kids to make the choices for themselves, make those positive choices and lead the way."

The green smoothie they whipped up included spinach for color.
The pineapple, banana, kiwi and other fruits made the drink a sweet success.
