Single-vehicle crash on Route 665 in Nelson County results in death of a 5-year-old passenger

NELSON CO., Va. — A 5-year-old child from Nellysford was killed on Tuesday as a result of a single-vehicle crash on Route 665.

According to a news release, the crash took place at 8:23 p.m. on Sunday. The car was traveling east on Route 665 when the driver lost control. Less than a mile east of Route 29, it ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree. The car then overturned into a creek.

The driver, Mercedes P. Toliver-Carrington, 18, of Amherst, was treated for non-life threatening injuries at UVA Hospital following the crash.

The 5-year-old passenger, Jeremiah C. Clark, was transported to UVA Hospital in Charlottesville where he died from crash-related injuries on Monday.

The driver and all four passengers were wearing seatbelts. The crash is still under investigation at this time and charges are pending. Alcohol was not a factor in the wreck.
