Ex-volleyball coach accused of filming young girls faces additional charges in Salem

SALEM, Va. — A former area volleyball coach accused of filming young girls without their knowledge is facing more charges.

Dewayne Barger turned himself in on Wednesday at the Salem Police Department. He was charged with 17 counts of unlawfully videotaping people under the age of 18 without their consent. Barger was originally charged in March with producing child pornography and child pornography possession.

Barger was indicted by a Salem Grand Jury on May 17. He’s accused of placing a covert camera in a Salem church on October 14, 2012, in an area where the volleyball players changed their clothes. The church allowed the team to use its facility for team functions.

Barger was taken into custody on Wednesday and released on an existing $50,000 bond.

We have news of more charges for the volleyball coach accused of filming his female players in the bathroom.


Dewayne Barger is facing four additional charges in relation to the ongoing child pornography investigation.

Barger has been charged with four counts of producing child pornography, according to a press realease.

The production charges are directly related to his previous possession of child pornography charges that were placed during his March 22 arrest.

Salem detectives say that the digital video of underage girls were made at his previous home in the 1400 block of Red Lane Extension.

Detectives also say that Barger lived at this residence between 2011 and 2012.

Barger is in jail without bond. He was fired from his job as a travel volleyball coach.

The investigation is ongoing.

We're learning new information tonight about a man accused of recording underaged girls in the bathroom.

Police say Dewayne Thomas Barger is an assistant director of a youth volleyball team.

According to a search warrant Dewayne Barger recorded several girls at his apartment in Salem.

The search warrant goes on to say Barger had a pen camera in his bathroom on Margaret Lane.

According to police, this illegal recording device picked up several of the players changing their clothes and trying on volleyball uniforms.

The camera caught the girls in various stages of undressing, and even caught them bathing.

According to the city's spokesperson, Barger also volunteered and was an assistant coach at Salem High School for several years.

A background check was performed and he did pass it.

As for the team he's currently involved with, the NRV Juniors or Next Revolution in Volleyball Juniors is a travel volleyball league that coaches girls from ages 12 to 18.

The group says it's cooperating fully with Salem Police.


We’re learning new information about a Salem man charged with filming naked underage girls without their knowledge.

Dewayne Barger, 37, has been charged with four counts of possessing child pornography. Barger was the assistant director of a youth volleyball team. Police say the victims may have been members of a youth volleyball team.

According to a search warrant filed by Salem detectives, someone found a pen camera in the bathroom of Barger's apartment.  When they looked at the files, they found videos of girls trying on volleyball uniforms. 

Other videos showed naked girls.

A Salem man is facing child porn charges for allegedly recording video of a naked girl.

Dewayne Barger, 37, is facing four counts of possessing child pornography. Investigators say they got information that a recording device was found in the bathroom of a private home. The person who found the device turned the camera over to police.

Investigators found video of a nude girl on the video, and determined that she was under 18 when the video was recorded. The girl was unaware that she was being filmed, according to police.

Barger is being held without bond at the Roanoke County/Salem Jail.
