The spring snowstorm that surprised western Virginia Thursday is also making travel difficult throughout the region. Mulitple accidents have been reported in the New River Valley.  A van overturned in the eastbound lanes of US 460 Thursday afternoon in Giles County. Drivers in the area reported treacherous conditions on snow-covered roads.

10:30 p.m. update: We've spoken with a Virginia State Trooper who was on the scene of the crash. He says charges are pending against the driver.  She had apparently lost control of her car and slammed into the guardrail. She was taken to the hospital for treatment for a fractured shoulder, as well as a blood test to see if she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The passenger was also arrested for a warrant out of Roanoke County. -------------------------------- 8:00 p.m. update: The accident has been cleared.  Drivers are still asked to proceed with caution through the area.

A multi-vehicle accident is causing major delays on Interstate 81 North in Roanoke County. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the north right shoulder is closed at mile marker 141. Drivers can expect delays of about 5 miles. ========================== 3:09 p.m. Friday: A multi-vehicle accident is causing delays on Interstate 81 northbound in Roanoke County. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the north left shoulder and left lane are closed at 0.6 mile south of Junction Virginia 419 Exit 141 in Salem.

An Altavista man was killed in an accident Saturday night in Pittsylvania County. The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. on Route 668, just south of Route 924 in Pittsylvania County. Investigators say 28-year-old Lafe McCluster was driving north when his Nissan Maxima ran off the left side of the road, hit an embankment, and flipped. McCluster was wearing a seat belt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic is moving again on Interstate 81 in Pulaski County. Earlier Thursday morning there was a back up near mile marker 105 caused by an accident. ============================== Two accidents on Interstate 81 North in Pulaski County are causing major delays, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. One accident is at mile marker 104.5. The south left lane is closed. According to VDOT, traffic is backed up nearly seven miles. The other accident is at mile marker 105.1.

A New Castle man driving a dump truck was killed in an accident on Route 311 in Craig County on Wednesday morning. Virginia State Police say Louie Frango was headed north on Route 311 near the intersection with Jockey Moore Lane when his dump truck went off the road and hit a tree. The accident happened around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday. Frango, 72, was not wearing a seat belt, according to Virginia State Police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Lynchburg College student died in an accident in Appomattox County on Sunday afternoon. Melissa Smith died after her car flipped on Route 638 (Wheelers Spring Road) around 3:15 p.m. Sunday. The accident happened less than a half-mile west of Route 47. Smith, an 18-year-old from Pamplin, was not wearing a seat belt.  She was the only person in the car. Smith was a junior at Lynchburg College.  She graduated from both Appomattox County High School and Central Virginia Community College last year with a high school diploma and a college associate's degree.

8:15 p.m. update : Both northbound lanes are now back open, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. ---------------------------- A tractor trailer accident has closed both northbound lanes in Botetourt County. This is at mile marker 151. A detour has been put in place off of the interstate, onto Route 11. The Virginia Department of Transportation expects the interstate to be closed for another couple of hours.

A multi-vehicle accident is causing major delays on Interstate 81 in Salem. The accident is near mile marker 137 on Interstate 81 North. The north left shoulder and left lane are closed. Traffic is backed up about nine miles.
