She monitors weather forecasts and has staff checking roads throughout the county before making a decision by the 5:30 a.m. deadline. "Grayson County is the highest elevated county in Virginia.

Property taxes in Grayson County have risen significantly. On Tuesday night, some residents gathered at a rally to oppose the 44% increase. County Administrator Jonathan Sweet said the tax hike could not be avoided. He said the county's finances are in the middle a perfect storm, including the bad economy, loss of jobs, reduced state funding and unanticipated expenses. "We didn't have the revenues needed to cover our obligations.  So, it was required to increase it to that rate," said Jonathan Sweet, Grayson County Administrator.

A manufacturing plant in Grayson County won't be closing down after all, thanks to a California company. "We wanted to make sure we had a place to go to work, and we didn't know whether we were going to be here or not," said Doug Freedle, Nautilus employee.   That's when a California based company, MedFit Systems Incorporated, stepped it to buy Nautilus, saving the factory that's been in Independence for more than 30 years. "Once we started looking at it and meeting the people and getting the work ethic and understanding how important this was to the community, it made 100 percent sense for us to continue that," said Dean Sbragia, CEO, MedFit Systems, Inc. But it wasn't an easy sell locally.

Mountain Empire District rivals Grayson County and Fort Chiswell both scored 44 points in first round wins last week. They met this week in Wythe County. The Pioneers won the earlier meeting, and here's another nugget.  The Blue Devils were looking to win 2 postseason games in the same season for the first time ever. In the 3rd quarter, it was 21 - 18 Grayson County. They would have the ball on their own 29 yard line on a first down and 10 when Quarterback Matt Rodgers threw to his wide open Spencer Roberts and took it to the 7 yard line to set up first and goal.

The defending state champs from Gretna made the long bus ride to Independence this week to square off against Grayson County.  The Blue Devils were ousted last year by another Dogwood District team in Dan River. The Hawks were perhaps the fastest team the Blue Devils had seen all season. Grayson got the ball first.  Knocking on the door at the 18 yard line when Max Rogers had his pass tipped but Spencer Roberts still hauled it in for a first down. On the very next play, Roberts was up again, this time keeping it himself, scrambling and diving into the corner of the endzone to put the Blue Devils up 8 to nothing after a successful two-point conversion.
