The man driving a motorcyle that wrecked on Interstate 81 is facing charges. The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. near Salem on Friday. It backed up traffic for more than two miles. State troopers say the man was riding north when traffic ahead suddenly slowed down. The man lost control of the bike and the force threw his body into the car in front of him. They say he rolled off the highway and into the median. The man is now in the hospital but should be ok. Police charged him following too closely.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the motorcycle accident blocking one lane of Interstate 81 northbound in Roanoke County has been cleared. Traffic delays are no longer expected. =========================== 3:57 p.m. Friday : According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, drivers should expect delays on Northbound Interstate 81 in Roanoke County due to a motorcycle accident. One lane of Interstate 81 Northbound is closed between mile markers 138 and 139. Traffic is backed up approximately 2.5 miles.

We have a traffic alert to pass along to you. A car has flipped on its roof on the southbound side of Interstate 81 in Montgomery County near the Ironto rest stop. That's around milemarker 129. We've put a call into Virginia State Police and will update this story once more information becomes available.

Beginning Sunday, April 7, nighttime detours and lane closures are scheduled for northbound Interstate 81 as part of the ongoing road construction project to build a five-mile truck climbing lane along southbound I-81 in Montgomery County between mile markers 120 and 125. A southbound detour will take place Sunday, April 7. The detour will begin at 10 p.m. each night and end at 6 a.m. the following morning. Southbound I-81 traffic will be detoured at exit 132 (Dixie Caverns) onto Route 11/460 and back onto I-81 at exit 118 (Christiansburg)

Drivers should expect major delays at mile marker 81 on Interstate 81 North in Wythe County due to congestion. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, traffic is backed up about four miles.

Update: This traffic problem is now clear. ===================== We're following a traffic alert out of Roanoke County. State police say a tractor trailer accident is closing the left lane going north at the Dixie Caverns exit. That problem started around 4:00 a.m. Friday. We're working to find out more about the problem and when the accident might clear up. We'll bring you more as it comes into the WDBJ7 Newsroom.

Overnight detours and lane closures on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County have been postponed, and are now scheduled to begin Wednesday and extend into next week. Detours will take place on Interstate 81 North on Wednesday and Thursday, beginning at 10 p.m. each night and lasting until 6 a.m. the following morning. Northbound traffic will be detoured at exit 118 in Christiansburg onto Route 11/460 and back onto Interstate 81 at exit 132 in Dixie Caverns. Southbound lane closures will also be in place beginning at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3 and Thursday April 4. The closures will continue each night until 6 a.m. the following morning.

Traffic is moving again on Interstate 81 in Pulaski County. Earlier Thursday morning there was a back up near mile marker 105 caused by an accident. ============================== Two accidents on Interstate 81 North in Pulaski County are causing major delays, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. One accident is at mile marker 104.5. The south left lane is closed. According to VDOT, traffic is backed up nearly seven miles. The other accident is at mile marker 105.1.
