A man from South Boston is in jail after a stabbing earlier this month. Michael Williams is charged with the malicious wounding of a 29-year-old man from Halifax. The stabbing happened on Poor Lane in South Boston on April 2. Investigators tracked down Williams and arrested him in Richmond.

Some unemployed people in Southern Virginia are getting an early gift this holiday season; a job. Dollar General is adding 50 jobs to its distribution center in South Boston. These are warehouse positions with full benefits and a starting pay of 10.50 an hour with options for pay increases. This addition is part of 6,000 jobs the company is adding to distribution centers and stores nationwide. People are asked to apply in person at their location on Philpott Road in South Boston.

Two people are recovering from stab wounds after a fight in South Boston. It happened Friday at the Westside Trailer park. When police got there they found a man with two cuts on his arm. His injuries are not serious. But while they were helping him, they found another man who had serious wounds on his neck, shoulder and leg. He was flown to Duke University Hospital for his injuries.

A replica of an important piece of history is missing in Halifax County and residents want it back. A copy of the Betsy Ross flag used to hang on a flag pole in the Boyd's Ferry Crossing Memorial Park in South Boston. It was made especially for that memorial by the Annin Flagmakers Company in Halifax County. The company made two copies for the Halifax County Historical Society, the other is safely in a nearby museum. Local residents notice the flag was missing and reported it to police.

Virginia State Police is investigating the death of a man while he was in police custody. South Boston police responded to the Super 8 Motel along Bill Tuck Highway around 4:30 Saturday morning.  They were responding to a disorderly man who damaged some property. Officers took him to the hospital for an evaluation when he became combative and was then put under arrest. The man then suffered some kind of medical emergency.  He was taken to another hospital where he was pronounced dead.  The man's name hasn't been released.

A South Boston man has claimed a $100,000 lottery ticket. Albert Logan won the cash in Virginia Lottery's Powerball Bonus Raffle on March 1. His winning ticket, #1575607, was drawn from more than 3 million entries. The tickets were vigen to Virginia Lottery players who bought Powerbal tickets on or after January 15. Players could also buy tickets separately for $1. If the weather's clear, most likely you'll see Breedlove Ford on Main Street in South Boston. "I walk and I also live on North Main Street," Ford said. Walking is his way of getting healthy. "A lot of people walk back and forth and you got walkers and as far as the sidewalk itself it ends up near Hamilton," Ford said. He's passed people on the road, either walking up the street to Halifax County High School or walking to shopping centers nearby. But the narrow roads and lack of sidewalk beyond the intersection of Hamilton Boulevard and North Main Street can get dangerous.

A South Boston store was robbed at gunpoint by a masked man on Sunday night. Investigators say a man walked into the Jiffy Food Store on Jan Randolph Boulevard around 9 p.m. and pulled a gun on the cashier. The robber was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and a mask. He got away with an undisclosed amount of money. If you have any information about the robbery you are asked to call the South Boston Police Department at 434-575-4273 or the Halifax County Crime Line at 434-476-8445.

A South Boston man died in a 3-vehicle accident last night around 6:00 p.m. in Amherst County. The accident happened on Virginia 151 about 4 miles north of Route 29. Jerrel Good of South Boston was killed in the crash. Two passengers in his car were injured as well as the drivers of the other 2 cars. They were all taken to the hospital. Charges are still pending in the investigation.

One person was hurt inside of a Halifax County business when a car crashed through the building Thursday afternoon. The accident happened at the Loan Max in the Centreville area of Halifax County. That's near South Boston. Police say a 65-year-old woman thought she was hitting the vehicle's brakes, but instead hit the accelerator. The person hurt inside of the building was taken to the hospital. The accident caused $15,000 in damage to the building, and an additional $4,500 to the car.

Sears will be opening a new store in Lynchburg. A "Sears Hometown Store" will locate in the Timberlake Station shopping center on Timberlake Road. Hometown stores are smaller versions of a regular Sears and carry mostly appliances.  Unlike the full-line retail locations, hometown stores open in shopping centers rather than malls.  The nearest hometown stores are located in Covington, Farmville, Moneta, and South Boston. A company spokesman says the Lynchburg store will open in May and employ 4 to 8 people.

A nursing home in South Boston is closing, but it's not clear when or why. South Boston Manor administrator Donald Liegey confirmed that the nursing home will close. Liegey said that he has not heard from the owners of the nursing home as to why or when the home will close. Around 40 people live at South Boston Manor, and 60 people are employed there. The nursing home is working to find new placements for South Boston Manor residents, Liegey said. This isn't the first shocker coming from this nursing home.

Two people were hurt in a fire that destroyed a car repair shop in Halifax County.  The fire broke out around 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at Beard's Auto Repair on Bold Springs Road in South Boston.  A neighbor said he heard an explosion at one point.  The roof had already collapsed by the time fire fighters got there.  Firefighters didn't say how the two people got hurt or how badly.

A South Boston man has been charged with raping a child younger than 13-years-old. John Buckner is accused of forcibly raping the child between Jan. 1 and May 6. Buckner was arrested Tuesday. He is being held at the Halifax Adult Detention Center without bond. An investigator with the South Boston Police Department says additional charges against Buckner are expected to be filed.

It's been three and a half years since a Halifax County family has seen their sister. Hattie Brown went missing in 2009. Now her family is talking about her disappearance in hopes someone knows where she is. They've printed t-shirts with her picture and the phone number for Virginia State Police. The family is also giving away hats and bracelets. They are also having a fundraiser next weekend to raise money for private investigators to help law enforcement find Brown.
