Most towns and counties have one. They help identify the region. We're talking about that all important logo.     Wythe County doesn't have one, but that is changing. The county is holding a contest to find the best logo. It's open to all ages, but you have to come up with a logo that promotes tourism in Wythe county. "This is definitely something that will brand not only Wythe County as a location but as the community it represents. So we definately want input from all our citizens," said Jenna Coleman, Wythe County's Public information officer.

A fire broke out around 1:00 this morning in the Cripple Creek area of Wythe County. The fire was on Francis Mill Road. Nobody was hurt in the fire. The house sustained major damage.

The accident has been cleared. Traffic is moving again normally. ------------ Traffic is backed up on Interstate 81 North in Wythe County because of a tractor-trailer accident. The accident is near mile marker 66. Traffic is backed up 4 miles. That's south of Wytheville, and north of Rural Retreat. The right lane is closed, and according to VDOT.

UPDATED: The accident involving a tractor trailer near the New River Bridge on Interstate 77 in Wythe County has been cleaned up. All lanes are open. ----------------------------- An overturned tractor trailer near the New River Bridge is affecting traffic on Interstate 77 in Wythe County. State Police say the south right lane is closed. The truck was carrying rock salt, so it will take some time to clean-up.

A woman was killed after an oak tree fell on a home in Wythe County Saturday afternoon It happened around 1:00 on Chestnut Tower Drive in the Major Grahams community. Authorities say an 80 foot tall snapped off during high winds and fell across a mobile home. 31-year-old Stephanie McGown died at the scene. 30-year-old Brook Lipsome, the owner of the home, was air lifted to the hospital with neck and back injuries.

An Ivanhoe man is accused of injuring a Wythe County sheriff's deputy while the deputy was trying to arrest him Friday. James Lee Parks Jr., 48, has been charged with being drunk in public, resisting arrest, and malicious wounding of an officer. Investigators say when Wythe County deputy Ray Danner tried to handcuff Parks, he shoved Danner against a wall. Danner hit his head and hand on the wall. He suffered a concussion and dislocated fingers. Deputies originally checked on Parks after they received a call that he was threatening to hurt himself with a knife.

UPDATE: 5:02 p.m. New information on the body discovered in the back of a van in Wythe County on Thursday. Police said it was 42 year old Kelly Lynette Culley of Taylorsville, North Carolina. Investigators said Lisa Damron and her husband Jerry Damron will likely face murder charges soon. The couple, also from Taylorsville, were pulled over for speeding Thursday on Interstate 77 in Wythe County. Just before the van was towed police found Culley's body in the back.

Investigators will try to figure out what started a fire at a convenience store Tuesday night. The Pure Country convenience store on Interstate 77 in Wythe County caught fire Tuesday night. That's near the Poplar Camp area, off Exit 24 on Interstate 77. No word on any injuries or how it started. We're working with firefighters to find out whether anyone was hurt.

Greg Biffle is not only an accomplished stock car driver-- currently third in the Sprint Cup standings -- but he's also a successful entrepreneur as well, with interests in Wythe County. As a way to give back to the local community he's making a surprise gift to the Wythe County schools. Biffle owns a stone mine in the area with his brother, Jeff. In front of teachers and students, Biffle announced that they will donate 5 percent of their sales in the month of September to the Wythe County school system.

Wythe County supervisors voted Tuesday to rescind controversial pay raises handed out to the County Administrator and Assistant County Administrator.  Board Chairman Bucky Sharitz confirmed the vote Wednesday morning. In January, the board approved raises of 11% for Administrator Cellell Dalton and 18% for Assistant Administrator Stephen Bear.  The board also approved hiring a county finance director at a higher salary.  The raises unleashed a flood of complaints from Wythe County residents who believed the salaries were not in line with what most people in the county make.

A man died after a boating accident at Rural Retreat Lake.  Police say he went fishing Saturday morning around 7:30 when he went missing.  His body was found shortly before 11 Sunday morning.  An autopsy will be held to figure out how the man died.  Police say he was not wearing a life-jacket.

The body of a Fries woman missing for five weeks has been found. The sheriff in Carroll County has confirmed that the body of Desia Rae George, 33, was found Wednesday in a gully about 150 yards from the Grayson - Wythe County line. The mother of four had been missing since April 15. Her youngest is a two month old baby girl. Police say Wednesday a boy was weed eating around the bank of a pond and found a cellphone. Police took the phone, plugged it in, and sure enough pictures appeared on the phone of Ms. George.

Cripple Creek is a small community in Wythe County, where families have lived for hundreds of years, but state officials say there's something in the water that has them concerned. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, DCR, says parts of Cripple Creek have tested high for fecal bacteria from livestock, pets and people. Tony Copenhaver was mowing his 7 acres when he almost ran over a black snake. He said keeping the creek clean is smart, but he doesn't want the government telling him how to do it, "Personally when the government comes in and tries to tell me what I can and can't do on my own land, I personally have a problem with that.

The tractor-trailer driver who investigators say caused the crash Monday on Interstate 81 South that shut down the road for several hours in Wythe County is now facing drug charges. Jamie Richardson was originally charged with reckless driving and failure to wear a seat belt. He is now facing one count each of possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of synthetic cannabinoids, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Investigators say Richardson was driving north on I-81 when his tractor-trailer crossed the median and overturned on I-81 South at mile marker 81 in Wythe County.

The accidents on Interstate 77 North on the New River Bridge in Wythe County have been cleared and traffic delays are no longer expected, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. ============================= 9:07 a.m. : Ice is to blame for a wreck that has both lanes of Interstate 77 North blocked on the bridge over the New River in Wythe County. State Police say the bridge is icy and it's caused three wrecks in all. Two of the wrecks were cars sliding on the ice and hitting the guard rail.

According to Appalachian Power and the National Weather Service, the threat of a dam failure at the Byllesby/Buck hydroelectric dam on the New River has been downgraded. Officials in Wythe County warned residents of a potential dam failure earlier Thursday. Here is the statement from the National Weather Service: The latest information received from American Electric Power is that the problems at the Byllesby/Buck hydroelectic dams on the New River have been mitigated to some extent.

Warrants have been obtained for the man accused of shooting at two Wythe County Sheriff's deputies Sunday in Max Meadows. The warrants have not been served against 50-year-old Richard Brooks because he is still hospitalized. Investigators say after shooting at the deputies, Brooks shot himself. The felony warrants are for two counts of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer and one count of using a firearm in commission of a felony. ---------------- 11 a.m. MONDAY : Investigators have released the name of a man who they say shot at two Wythe County Sheriff's Office deputies, and then shot himself Sunday in Max Meadows.

VDOT reports a 2 mile back up at I-77 northbound at the I-81 Exit 32 at Fort Chiswell in Wythe County.  The delay is because of congestion.
